I believe this is a Bufflehead. They are a “small diving duck, mostly white with glossy green-black to purple-black head and back. Head has large white patch behind eye. First winter male is darker overall.” (From the app, iBird).
I saw him while hiking late last week, but it took me a while to identify him. The thing is, I could be wrong:).
