A Long Drive With a View

FullSizeRender.jpg

This was our view about a year ago. We drove from Salt Lake City to Yosemite. I am not sure what I was thinking, but I thought it was a shorter drive. If you look close, you will see the road winding down into the valley.

We are planning our travel for 2019. We have three or four major trips planned, and maybe some shorter drives. They are mostly about the photos, and beautiful visits with nature.

Have a great week.

My head in the clouds

FullSizeRender.jpg

It was late February, 2016 and I’m NOT in my comfort zone. I have an intense fear of heights. I took this shot from worlds tallest building, located in Dubai. To be exact, the Burj Khalifa is 2,722 feet tall. That is a bit higher than my average walk takes me. The view from the top is amazing, and while I was not at the top, but it sure felt like it.

Dubai is a very interesting place. It is surrounded by water and desert, mostly the latter. This view does not do the size and scale justice. It really does not cover that much square footage, but it is the largest and the most populous city in the UAE.

Along with a few friends, we went on a desert safari. We rode camels, had some interesting foods, and surfed the dunes (well, I guess that’s what you call it).

Have a great week!

A view out the window

IMG_0057.JPG

I have so many pictures that I have taken from airplane windows. I don’t usually sit in a window seat, but on this occasion, Teresa had the window and I was able to take this photo. We were landing and the view was just stunning. This shot was in Utah, as we approached Salt Lake City. I believe that is the Colorado River in the valley.

Paris: The City of Light

FullSizeRender.jpg

La ville de lumière ... The City of Light. Yes, Paris. We were out for dinner. I think we were still looking for the restaurant when we came around the corner and this was the view. I love Paris, and the French people.

So, why is it called the city of light? One reason is that during the 18th century, Paris was a center for enlightenment. It was a center for education, philosophy and learning. It was also one of the first cities to use streetlights during the Great Exhibition of 1889.

Speaking of enlightenment: I remember a trip to Europe that required a connection through the Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (that airport use to intimidate me). There were two of us. I’ll call the other guy Joe.  We were on the way home from a long trip. Joe and I were boarding, and I was first for the final check. I greeted the French gentleman, “Bonjour.” He checked my paperwork, and waved me on. Joe, said, “Hello”, to which the French guy gave Joe a funny look, then told him that was not good enough. He said that if he wanted to pass, he needed to use some French. We both laughed, and it worked out.

I have always tried to be sensitive to the language and customs of the locals when I travel. I never had that happen before, or since, but respecting people goes a long way! That works at home and abroad.
