A woodpecker convention?

FullSizeRender.jpg

This Red-bellied woodpecker seemed to be inquisitive, but he only stuck around for a few minutes, then took off. I was able to get another shot before I lost sight of him. This was taken on Sunday, July 29. We saw several of them along the Miami River. It must have been a woodpecker convention.

Jays everywhere ...

FullSizeRender.jpg

I was about an hour late for my photo walk on Saturday morning. Teresa and I went to a Dragons baseball game Friday evening, and it was late when we returned home. So, it took me a while to get moving.

Saturday morning the weather was perfect for walking. I expect to see a lot more activity, but the birds were in hiding, except the jays. I am not sure I have ever seen so many blue jays in such a short time. They were extra loud and super active. I saw this at multiple locations too. Interesting morning.

On a different topic: I wanted to share some things I am working on. I am planning to post a weekly video (a vlog), starting very soon. The plan is to record some video while I am out taking photos during the week, and then combine it to post something that is about 10 to 15 minutes long once a week.

I am also preparing a free course on ‘better mobile photography’. I have taught it twice, but it needs some final editing to add what I learned while teaching it to the last two groups. I think I am going to do the class virtually as a webinar. Please let me know if you would be interested.

Lastly, you may notice some format changes to the text part of my daily post starting sometime this week. I plan to start using markdown to write my text, and it may show up as a different font. Nothing significant, I hope.

Still singing

FullSizeRender.jpg

I have made a habit out of taking photos of not just birds, but birds singing. This one is a Indigo Bunting. It was a overcast day, but it was a beautiful photo, just waiting to be photographed.

Clark’s Grebe

FullSizeRender.jpg
FullSizeRender.jpg

This is a Clark’s Grebe .. or is it a Western Grebe? They are basically the same.

This is one very cool bird. It was floating along and then it just disappeared. It must have been totally submerged for 3 to 5 mintues, or at least it seemed like it. It also has these cool, red eyes.

A cool fact: “A group of grebes are collectively known as a "water dance" of grebes.“  From the iBird Pro app.

I may have mentioned it before, but I use iBird Pro to help me identify birds. It is not cheap, but there is a Lite version if you want to try with less expense. These links are to the iOS version.

Brown Thrasher

Yes, this is a Brown Thrasher. I love the yellow eyes (you may have to zoom in to see that). This is another migratory bird, so they are only here for the summer. I think this is a very cool bird.

This fellow taught me another lesson: Take every photo. When I spotted this bird, I thought it was another sparrow. I noticed it was a little larger, so I decided to take a photo, then I could see the beak and I new it was something different. Pictures are cheap. I mean, I’m not using film:). Take every shot!!
