Before and After Lunch

Yesterday afternoon we took a walk on the bike path and then drove out to Garbry Big Woods Reserve. It was very warm, and there was not much activity. We did see some turtles .. but that’s a photo for another day.

Just before we headed home I saw this Red-headed Woodpecker in a tree at the entrance to the Garbry Big Woods Sanctuary. I shot the photo on the right. The shadows were not great, but it was a photo.

Suddenly the woodpecker took off, heading in my direction, but at about a 40° incline. After a short flight, he seemed to stop mid-flight then return to the same tree. I captured a much better photo, but missed the best shot of what looked like a dragonfly in his mouth. In that photo you can tell he is still working on getting it down the hatch. Yummy, protein.

Hey, Red Head

I have been watching for a Red-headed Woodpecker for a long time, and I was finally able to get a good photo of one while I was participating in an organized nature hike at Garbry Big Woods Sanctuary.

The hike was a lot of fun, but this photo was the best part of the entire two-hour event. There was actually two of them, and I also saw a Pileated Woodpecker, but I was not able to get a photo. Sometimes you take what nature gives you, and just enjoy the experience.
