I Found You!

DSC_2413.jpeg

I have not study the behaviors of Blue Jays much, but sometimes I sware they are following me aroud while I am hiking. Its more of a moking behavior. I guess that fits with their normal behaviors.

When I shot this photo, we had already hiked about 1.5 miles. I had heard the jays in the area, but had not been able to locate one. I did enjoy it.

A Little Red On The Head

DSC_2295.jpeg

We hiked at the Rangeline Road entrance to Stillwater Prairie Reserve recently. As I got out of the car, I could see this male Downy Woodpecker near the top of a nearby tree. He took off right after I took this photo. He looks a like he is eating for winter.

Hangout: Warm-up

We were hiking and taking photos when a good friend text me. He said that they had just passed a large number of Turkey Vultures at a specific location. Cool.

You guessed it:,we had to go look. We were almost back to the car, so we wrapped up and headed that way. The photos above are a sample of what we found. Teresa shot the top photo, and I captured the second one.

#Ugly but beautiful flyers.

Same Bird, Different Look

DSC_1126.jpeg
DSC_1112.jpeg

I like to try and get multiple photos of the same image from different angles. This time, this friendly Indigo Bunting helped me out by jumping to a different branch. I moved too .. and as you can see, the lighting of the bird is totally different. I like the second shot better. I like the shadows and highlights in this shot.

Now for something I did not know:

[The Indigo Bunting] displays sexual dimorphism in its coloration; the male is vibrant blue in the summer, with brightly colored plumage during the breeding season to attract a mate. It is brown during the winter months, while the female is brown year-round. (I had no idea. See the Wikipedia entry)

Killdeer Crossing

Adjustments.jpeg
Adjustments.jpeg

I have tried to photograph a Killdeer this entire summer, but while have seen a few, I have struggled to capture a photo. I finally saw this family of killdeer walking across the road. There was three babies, but only 2 made it into the photo. My bad.

Yes, I stopped the car and photographed the crossing. The second photo is a youngster making its way across the road. The photos are not great, but it was fun .. and maybe I saved them from oncoming traffic.
