Nest

When I went out to take these photos, I was going to capture a few photos of empty nest. Well, look close .. there is an eagle in the second nest, and a bird in the top one too. The photo below is the eagle in the tree next to the eagle nest. They will have eggs in the nest late next month.

Nest

What a contrast. The top nest is about the size of a very small tea cup. It could easily fit in the palm of my hand. I can't tell for sure what bird built this nest, but it would be a very small. This nest is just three or four inchers across. So tiny and very low to the ground.

The second nest is from a Bald Eagle. She is currently in the nest (yes, look close). They have new eggs in there. That nest is six or seven feet accros. and likly as tall. It is high up in the trees.

Very cool.

Bald-faced?

Welcome to the home of the Bald-Faced Hornet. This hornet is a relative of the yellowjacket. They can be very agressive so I recommend not provoking them.

A few facts from Wikipedia:

Bald-faced hornets are omnivorous, and considered to be beneficial due to their predation of flies, caterpillars, and spiders. Their aggressive defensive nature, though, makes them a threat to humans who wander too close to a nest or when a nest is constructed too close to human habitation. They vigorously defend the nest, with workers stinging repeatedly, as is common among social bees and wasps. The bald-faced hornet has a unique defense in that it can squirt or spray venom from the stinger into the eyes of vertebrate nest intruders. The venom causes immediate watering of the eyes and temporary blindness. wikipedia.

And a bonus: I think this is a Persimmon tree.

Bird Hotel … With Vacancies

Adjustments.jpeg

It is an interesting time of year to walk around outdoors. The trees look like vacant hotels .. yes, bird hotels. Some of the larger trees have 3, 4 or even 5 empty next. In a few months, it all starts anew.
