A Little Sunshine

I photographed these two American Goldfinch on two different days, in two different locations. I share them both to make a point about sunlight. A very small difference in lighting and saddows makes a big difference in the photo. I did some edits, but they are still very different. There was more sun in the 1st photo.

Low Sun: Long Shadows

Adjustments.jpeg

The sun is not at a low angle and creates some interesting photo opportunites at odd hours of the day. Even at mid-day, it is low on the horizon. This makes shadows very long, and extends the golden hour).

So how low is that sun in the sky? Check out this app: SunCalc

Here is what it can do ... and look that the shadow difference computed in the Jan 5 vs June 22 photo:

SunCalc shows the movement of the sun and sunlight-phase for a certain day at a certain place.

You can change the suns positions for sunrise, selected time and sunset see. The thin yellow-colored curve shows the trajectory of the sun, the yellow deposit shows the variation of the path of the sun throughout the year. The closer a point in the center, the higher the sun above the horizon. The colors in the above time-slider shows the sunlight during the day. The sun on the time slider can be moved by mouse or with the arrow keys of the keyboard

Capturing The Sun

IMG_9131.jpeg

I shot this photo on Thurday. As you can see, the snow was still hanging around. The sun and blue sky was so beautiful.

When everything aligns, shots like this are possible. You capture the suns rays, and still manage to get deep shadows and great color. This is one of those photos.

There was a thin layer of ice on the pond. It was so very still. No birds or other wildlife today. Well, I take that back .. I saw one woodpecker.

Enjoy what remains of your weekend. Make it a great week!

A ray of ...

Complete these sentence: A ray of ....

Teresa caught this ray of sunshine this past summer. It was a beautiful summer day, and the sun was peaking through the trees leaving us with this memory.

Natures lighting

FullSizeRender.jpg

It was cloudy and Teresa was driving the rental car. We were in Nevada and at places, the clouds allows rays of sun to create some interesting shadows across the mountains. This shot captured that well. I love the highlights on the top of the mountain, as well as across the valley floor .

Some of the best photos are simply a matter of using nature’s lighting (and shadows) to create awesome effects on the landscape.
