Majestic Raptor

Teresa and I took a long hike with Cooper one morning this week. It was cool outdoors but the sky was blue and it was perfect hiking weather. When we are walking one or more of our dogs on the bike trail, we rarely take a camera, other than maybe our iPhone. On this morning, I suggeted Teresa bring her big girl camera. The last time I hiked this trail I saw a pair of Egrets in the river. I tried to capture a good photo with my iPhone, but it just was not enough zoom.

About 3 miles into our walk Teresa noticed a large bird in a tree on the other side of the Great Miami River. We have seen several Turkey Vulture in the trees in this area lately so I really did not think much of it. She focused her lens and shot these photos. It was a beautiful Bald Eagle. This is likely one of the pair that nest about 3 to 4 miles to the south of this location. So majestic.

A Young Family Outting

Teresa and I hiked at Grand Lake Saint Marys State Park - at Windy Poing this week. Over the last few years, we have hiked here so many times. It is common for us to see
Bald Eagles near that location.

As we hiked, I mentioned to Teresa that it has been a while since we have seen any eagles at this location. Almost on cue, she spotted two Juvenile Bald Eagles on the rocks not far from where we were located. What a wonderful surprise.

Eaglets?

We have been watching this pair for several years now. I am sure we have babies in the nest, but no photos yet. These photos are shot from a football field away .. well, not actually but that far away. I get really excited about birds of prey, especailly eagles.

Who?

This was a big surprise. When I saw her flying low and close to our location, and then landing in a nearby tree I thought it was odd for a hawk to be landing so close to us. The size was about right for a large hawk, but that was not the behavior of a hawk. It behaved like other owls we have seen but the timing .. I just did not expect to see an owl at 2:00p. Once it landed I started snapping photos. It just looked at us for a long time .. but did not take off until we started to walk again. It was so special.

Oh, it is a Barred Owl. We were hiking at Stillwater Prairie Reserve. I love how nature is always full of surpirses.

Not So Bald

I am sure i will not do this justice, but I'll try. We were driving home on a back road when I saw this large bird in a tree. We were not far from it so I slowed down. The tree hung over the road. I coiuld tell by this time that it was an adult Bald Eagle. I slowly pulled the car toward the location, stopping just under the beautiful Eagle. All I had was my iPhone. I had already opened the window so I held the phone out the window and startred snapping photos. You can't tell it by the photo because I roated the image but I was parked below her in the middle of the road.

I text a good friend and shared a couple photos. After describing the situation, he responded: "... A wise man once told me, “don’t look up while directly under a bird, especially a big one!” Good advise .. we did not encounter any 💩.
