Purple?

When I saw this bird I thougt it was a House Finch but I was not able to take a photo. A few minutes later I had a second chace. Now i am fairly certain it is a Purple Finch. Some info to compare the two: House Finch or Purple Finch? Here’s How to Tell Them Apart.

Big And Small Woodpeckers

Teresa captured this photo. I wanted to share it to show the size difference between a Downy Woodpecker (one of the smallest woodpeckers) and the Pileated Woodpecker.

From the audubon link:

"Excluding the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, which is largely believed to be extinct, 22 woodpecker species call North America home. The Pileated is the largest living woodpecker in North America—nearly three times taller than the petite Downy Woodpecker."

They are very large .. but a cool looking bird.

Try That Again

A couple of days ago I mentioned that I missed a photo of a Red-tailed Hawk. We drove by that same wooded area this week and she was in the tree again. I took a different approach this time. Without getting too long on this, lets just say I drove by and stopped up the road then walked back. It worked. I saw a second one too, but didn't get that photo.
